The Yellow and Black are Back 🎶 (Yes, I'm actually referring to Stryper.)

If in the 1980s you had told me that Stryper would have the #1 album in the Metal category on iTunes in the year 2020 (putting aside that I wouldn’t have known what iTunes was in the 80s), I would have really wondered about the future.

I might have thought, “Is 2020 kinda awesome, or do things get weird?”

I may not post here consistently, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have streaks going on elsewhere! 🤓😎

This is from Duolingo.

Listening to an album that is 36 years old today. 🎶🤘

TFW your 15-minute stand up meeting takes 1hr 15min.

I’ve been studying a little bit of Morse Code for the heck of it, and while I’m getting better, the difference between “X” and “=“ keeps tripping me up.

Fun bonus episode from one of the (growing number of) podcasts I support.

Screenshot of the History of English espisode about Beatles' lyric pronunciations.

An old memory is currently playing in my brain: the chorus of my friend’s band’s eponymous song from high school, Don’t Shake the Box, the Nuts are at the Bottom. (And, yes, that whole thing was the band name.)

Even though our trip to Iceland had to be canceled, I’m continuing to learn a little bit of Icelandic (we’ll get there someday!). The Drops app recently added a new section for pandemic-related terms, which is pretty great.

Stipe ~~> Rising Heart Rate

I just watched a little highlight video of some of Stipe Miocic’s UFC fights. I think my heart rate probably rose by 15BPM while sitting still on the couch.

I get so nervous watching him! It’s bad enough live, but even on replay I feel an excited stress. He fights again soon (August 15), and I am going to lose my mind watching it.

For me, he’s just so connected to Cleveland sports and the breaking of the city’s long losing streak. He’s an archetypal Clevelandar in many ways. A little awkward at times, very real, hard-working, and a champion.

I like DC (his opponent), but I’ll be rooting, hooting, and hollering for Stipe.

Controllerism

I was reminded today of the “Robocaster” that an artist I met back at SecondConf in 2013 designed, so in searching for a video of it to show to a friend, I found this fairly comprehensive article about him and the musical genre he co-coined(?). If you ever get a chance to talk to Moldover, he’s a really nice guy.

Did I just force my daughter to listen to Weird Al Yankovic’s The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota?

Yes, yes I did.

And she is not a fan. 😂

TFW you realize you might be almost as comfortable in vscode as you are in Xcode.

I keep learnin’.

Every day.

Trying to improve.

Sometimes I take a step (or three) back.

But I try to keep moving forward.

eBook Reading Progress

It’s halfway through the year, and according to Apple Books and Amazon Kindle (so, not counting audio or print books, of which I’ve finished far fewer), I’ve read 31 books so far in 2020.

I think I might prefer a pages or words metric, as some of these books were not terribly long.

Still, I’m pleased with my progress. ☺️

HK

I have wanted to get back to Hong Kong so badly, for so long. The last time I was there was in early 2001.

Now, I fear for HK. Pandemic aside, I’m sadly less sure I’d actually want to return now.

Heck, I’d probably get arrested for being loudly pro-democracy — honestly, if I do eventually go back, there’s a good chance I’ll make some kind of racket. 👀

Yeah, I think I’m done with Firefox. Years ago, I was able to AppleScript it enough for my purposes, but now it’s simply a disaster.

Anybody know if Keyboard Maestro, SikuliX, or similar can be used to control Firefox?

I happened upon this unexpected video today.

I’m glad it exists.

Wish I could join the virtual Micro Meetup today!

Unfortunately, I have to miss it. :

I hope everyone has a blast!

The Fun & Tyranny of Programming Editor Choices

Now that I find myself programming outside of Xcode at least as often as within, I keep thinking about dusting off my Vim skills. In the meantime, however, I’m finding I quite like VSCode.

Should I even bother with Vim? (And if so, orthodox vim or neovim?)

Of course, I can’t help myself, so I’m playing with ST3, BBEdit, Spacemacs, the Jetbrains IDEs, etc. 😅 Still, I’d like to focus and try to master one (in addition to Xcode, that is).

TFW you spend the entire day working, juggling, and scrambling to get everything done so you can take a bike ride and get some much-needed exercise minutes, only to finally “finish”, lock the computer, stand up, and have your Apple Watch say “10% battery, dummy.”

The Domain Startups Building an Uncensorable Internet on Top of Ethereum

Some days, I like everything about working with programs and computers except for the software and hardware.

Just watched (all?) four episodes (of about 4 minutes in duration each) of Two Pink Doors on Hulu/FX. 📺

If you’re into dark humor you might want to check it out. We liked it! 😅
